Can you believe it? This past Sunday, April 11th marks the finish of our second year at Rachada Thai Cuisine.

We began serving great Thai food in Moorpark when we first opened the doors on April 11th, 2008.

It’s been a wonderful two years, primarily because of you our very special customers. We love serving our special brand of Thai food. Nothing makes us happier than seeing the smiles on our happy customers’ faces when they enjoy our delicious Thai food, Rachada Thai Cuisine style!

In celebration of our anniversary this week, we have a special Thai dessert surprise for you!

With the Guiberson fire recently near Moorpark, followed by the rains last week, John North of ABC News was out in Moorpark doing a follow-up story. When we saw the news truck outside the restaurant, we thought maybe the crew was looking for some great Thai food. Well, that wasn’t exactly the case.

For those that grew up in Thailand, Thai Boat Noodles (Kew teuw leur) is a special comfort food that reminds you of home. This is a very popular dish that you’ll see everywhere on the streets of Thailand available from the street vendors.

Thai Boat Noodles is a satisfying and hearty soup with an intense brown broth, beef balls, slices of beef and plenty of rice noodles. The flavors bring out the classic Thai balance of spice, sour, sweet, and salt.

Here at Rachada Thai Cuisine, we serve our delicious version of Thai Boat Noodles in a nice big bowl, almost a meal by itself.

In Thailand, it’s common to get Thai Boat Noodles from the street vendors in smaller bowls that hold less than a cup of soup. To be honest, if you love Thai boat noodles like most people in Thailand, just one of these smaller bowls is simply not enough. You might need three or four of the little bowls before you’ve had your fill.

If you visit Thailand, you might even run into a Thai boat noodle soup contest. See who can finish the most number of bowls of soup, stacking their empty bowls (the small bowls) eight and nine high as they go.

Our Bruce Lee is actually a Silver Arowana fish, native to the Amazon River in South America. The Arowana, sometimes referred to as the Dragon Fish, have shiny armor-like scales, and suggest a resemblance to the dragons in Asian folklore.

And Bruce Lee has a partner. This is “Fat Boy”, a Red Parrot Cichlid fish. The popular Red Parrot Cichlid is actually a hybrid, most likely a cross between a South American Cichlid (severum cichlid) and the Central American Cichlid (midus cichlid).

Bruce Lee has quite a personality. Sometimes Bruce just likes to admire himself in the glass. He’s quite a  handsome boy, don’t you think?

Our customers enjoy the fish aquarium we have on display in the restaurant dining room. Bruce Lee and Fat Boy are simply part of the family at Rachada Thai Cuisine. And children love visiting with the fish when they come to see us.  We’re not sure what the kids enjoy more, our delicious Thai food or our entertaining fish in the aquarium.

Sometimes Bruce Lee gets a little excited. When he’s hungry and decides it’s feeding time, he will dart back and forth, almost as though he’s demanding some attention. He puts on quite a spectacle, swirling the water and kicking up the bubbles.

The monk blessing ritual, a tradition in the Thai culture, was performed by nine Buddhist monks from the Wat Thai Buddhist Temple located in the San Fernando Valley at Coldwater Canyon and Roscoe Blvd.

The Buddhist ceremony involved the traditional rituals of holding the holy string, chanting and prayer, the lighting of candles, and the sprinkling of the holy water to bring well being and prosperity.

In the Buddhist ceremony the holy string passes from the golden statue of Buddha, winds around the bowl of holy water and passes through the hands of the nine monks.

By linking these three things together, the Buddha, the Dharma and the Sangha, it powers the holy water.

The monks, dressed in the traditional safron robes, are seated as they prepare and setup for the ceremony. 

While linked together by weaving the holy string through their hands, the monks perform the ceremony with chanting and prayer.

The nine monks are seated at the ceremony table as the blessing ritual continues.

Friends and family are gathered around to partake in the ceremony.

A joyous spirit of celebration has everyone smiling.

The Thai dishes are prepared and set out on the table in preparation for the banquet to commence.

The dishes include “Steamed Green Mussels, “Baked Mussels”, “Pad Thai Noodles”, “Thai Green Curry”, “Hamhock over Rice”, “Fish Cakes in Curry Sauce”, “Spicy Catfish”, “Tom Yum Fish”.

The Buddhist monks continue with more chanting and prayer as they finish the first part of the blessing ceremony.

After the ceremony of prayer and blessing, the monks sit down to enjoy the banquet prepared in their honor.

The ceremony took place in the morning hours, so that the monks could particpate in the banquet meal. The Buddhist tradition forbids the monks to eat after midday.

After the meal is finished, the monks gather with members of the family to finish with prayer and blessings as the ceremony is completed.

Afterward, the monks used the bamboo stick to sprinkle holy water throughout the restaurant including the kitchen.

The Buddhist ceremony performed by the Thai monks was a moving experience for all of us.  We all enjoyed the festive gathering of family and friends to help us celebrate the blessing of Rachada Thai Cuisine.
